STATEMENT: The Accountability Movement Condemns Trump’s Tariffs as a Direct Attack on Working Families

April. 9, 2025 —

WASHINGTON, DC – Following Donald Trump’s announcement of sweeping new tariffs yesterday, Aquí: The Accountability Movement Executive Director Sindy M. Benavides issued the following statement:

“Our leaders need to choose people over politics — imposing reckless tariffs will devastate working families by increasing prices, particularly latino and immigrant communities already struggling to make ends meet. These tariffs won't punish foreign governments; they will punish everyday Americans, driving up the cost of food, clothing, transportation and key necessities at  a time when many can least afford it.

"Instead of delivering relief, these policies continue to fuel economic hardship, worsening inflation while slashing the very social services that families rely on. These tariffs are not about strengthening the economy—they’re about deepening inequities and using economic fear as a weapon."

"Aquí stands firmly against these harmful policies. We will not stay silent while our leaders disregard the struggles of working people. We call on leaders at every level to reject these tariffs, stand with our communities, and fight for real economic justice.”
