STATEMENT: Aquí Applauds the Confirmation of U.S. Magistrate Irma Carrillo Ramirez
Dec. 7, 2023 —
Aquí applauds the confirmation of U.S. Magistrate Irma Carrillo Ramirez to serve on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The 80-12 bipartisan vote included support from her home-state senators, Texas Republicans John Cornyn and Ted Cruz. A daughter of Mexican immigrants, Ramirez is the epitome of the American Dream.
The addition of U.S. Magistrate Irma Carrillo Ramirez to the New-Orleans based court that covers Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana comes at a critical time when cases that test the tenets of our values and democracy are being reviewed by these judges. Joining this majority conservative male-bench, she is the second Biden-appointed judge on this court following Louisiana-born judge Dana Douglas, the first Black woman to sit on the 5th Circuit.
"Magistrate Judge Carrillo Ramirez’s confirmation, the first Latina to serve the 5th Circuit, proves that our elected officials can come together and choose what’s best for the American people, regardless of party or political agendas. This show of bipartisan action is what’s needed to move our country forward and protect the best interests of our nation. We applaud the Biden Administration’s continued commitment to bring greater diversity to the federal bench, and urge the Senate’s swift confirmation of other key positions that require immediate action.
Magistrate Judge Carrillo Ramirez’s story is an ode to our country’s promise that, no matter your background, opportunities are limitless. Her life experience is precisely what’s needed from our public servants to best represent the American people.” -Nathaly Arriola Maurice, Aquí’s Lead Strategist
